Missed Part One of When Your Creativity Takes a Nanna Nap? Shimmy on over here and check it out …
So, after establishing (in part one) that creativity ‘JUST IS’ that it is in each and everyone of us... but that yours is currently all dressed up in it’s beige PJ’s and taking a Nanna Nap….I hear you asking - are there any actual steps you can take? Is there anything you can do to strip your creativity out of it’s beige PJ’s and wake that little bugger up?
It’s simple really.
Ok so maybe it’s not that simple. Maybe you have forgotten how to play exactly. You might be thinking to yourself - umm yeh nice one Kerry, I stopped playing right about the time I stopped riding my tricycle. You might be thinking I have NO frickin idea how to play and then you'll close this screen vowing to never read such a useless bit of advice or this blog ever again.
You might just want to check out this list filled with little nuggets of playspiration that I have put together for you.
Playspiration Nuggets - to Help Strip Your Creativity Out of it’s Beige PJ’s & Wake That Little Bugger Up (yeh, ok my creativity might have been taking a little snooze itself coming up with that genius title for this list - I’m going with it anyway!)
1. Get Loved Up!
Ain’t nothing quite as playful as being playful in love. Send your special someone an unexpected sexy text message, leave a little love note on their pillow, leave a trail of confetti/flowers/beers to a secret playful destination where you will be waiting with massage oils/food/more beers or a little something else! Play an actual game with your loved one - think hide & seek, uno, marbles, stage a water pistol or balloon fight. The sillier the better.
2. Make a sand castle.
Or a sand turtle (see pic above, yep I made that!), sand boat, sand mermaid or any other sand thing you can dream up. You don’t need to think about it, just find yourself a beach or sand pit and get your hands in the sand. There is something about sand, a secret power that has the ability to transform everyone into a creative genius. You can even buy kinetic sand in toy stores now, it flies of the shelves and if you don’t live near a beach…or even if you do, get yourself some of this stuff…it’s awesome!
3. Take a different path.
This is so simple to do but the impact it can have on your day is amazing. If you usually walk or drive to work following a particular route…shake it up and choose a different route. If you have kids in the car ask them to play a game with you…we sometimes play ‘yes’ ‘no’ which is a game where you either say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to your favourite and least favourite houses you see as you drive along, or ‘spot the letterbox’ where we look for the most interesting letterbox on the street. It is a way to help you notice what is actually in the space around you instead of being an auto pilot, which makes our minds lazy and lazy minds = sleepy creativity!
Going a different way to the same place can be challenging, especially if you are a major creature of habit and have a tight schedule that you find difficult to break - but breaking it and challenging yourself may just be what you need to help you gain a fresh perspective.
4. Random acts of Playfulness
One of my favourite ways to do this is to randomly pop a flower into letterboxes. The best kind of Random Acts of Playfulness are the kind where you expect nothing in return, the secret, sneaky kind! Stick a post it note with a fun message on someones front door or commit to one day of dishing out random compliments to passers by, your work mates or your family and friends, this only works if the compliments are genuine and heartfelt, make sure you mean what you say… ‘Hey you, I just wanted to call and tell you I think you are an amazing Mumma and you do a fantastic job!’ how nice would it be to both get and give a call like that!
5. Get Physical
I’m not talking about going for a run or a cross fit sesh at the gym, although if that’s your jive then go for it, but this works better if it’s something a little silly, something you don’t usually do. Throw your legs up in the air in a hand stand, flip yourself around in a cartwheel, try balancing, juggling, fire twirling (you can totally do this without fire - just pop a couple of tennis balls in some footy socks and twirl away) If you are completely incapable of getting upside down in cartwheel mode (you know your own body best!) then do something that you know you can do, but that is entirely silly!
Being playful is a sure fire way for you to challenge your own ‘rules’ which are usually self imposed by the way lady!
Break your own rules, challenge your mind and allow yourself do things a little differently. Make fun the main and only objective…then watch your creativity stretch and yawn as it emerges from it’s slumber.
Have Fun - Get Happy
